M-KOPA Solar wins Global Mobile Award

M-KOPA Solar, a Nairobi-headquartered pay-as-you-go solar energy provider for off-grid customers, has been named the “Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets” at the 2016 Global Mobile Awards, a prestigious event which offers organizations the opportunity to showcase their products and services.

M-KOPA is the world’s leading ‘pay-as-you-go’ energy provider to off grid homes. The company has developed a better way to provide affordable, safe and clean energy to billions living off the grid.
Thanks to the sun’s rays and mobile technology, 300,000 low income homes in Africa now have lights, radio and phone charging. All this at the flick of a switch and for less than they used to spend on kerosene.
After a year of payments, customers can own their systems or upgrade to more great products and services on our affordable mobile payment plans.
“A disruptive business model that changes the energy landscape – scalable and financially inclusive to all population segments of the economy through innovative mobile access,” the judges stated in a press release.
The awards ceremony took place at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month, and M-KOPA’s CEO, Jesse Moore was on hand to receive the award in front of executives from more than 1,000 mobile companies from around the world.
“This is great recognition for M-KOPA at the ‘Oscars’ of the mobile phone industry. Everyone I spoke to at Congress is loving how our mobile technology is helping our customers move beyond the grid and transforming millions of lives,” he said.
Last year was a good one for M-KOPA. It won the 2015 Zayed Future Energy Prize and was selected by Fortune Magazine as one of the top 50 Companies Changing the world.
Still in 2015, the company raised US$19 million from a group of investors to further expand its management team and international operations, and launch new products.
The company has also started 2016 on a good note. Last month, it announced the launch of solar-powered digital TV, making it possible for millions of its customers to own TVs and “learn more about the world.”
Since launching in 2011, M-KOPA has connected more than 280,000 homes in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to solar power and is adding over 500 homes on a daily basis.
