Parisians panic as technical fault with Bastille Day fireworks sends thick plumes of smoke up the Eiffel Tower
Videos from the capital showed plumes of thick black smoke rising from the base of the world famous landmark at the same time as the horror attacks in Nice were unfolding.
The scenes sparked immediate fears that the city was once again under attack by Islamic extremists just nine months after the coordinated ISIS assault of November last year that left more than 130 people dead. Images shared online also showed a raging inferno just metres from the tower. However, French police later allayed fears by confirming the blaze and resulting smoke had been the result of a technical fault with fireworks planned for later in the evening in celebration of Bastille Day.
