A camera pursued Serena Williams through the corridors of the All England Club after she had won her seventh Wimbledon ladies' singles title.
The footage made it feel as if we were following royalty. Officials fawned over her, assorted celebrities said 'yes' very emphatically as she walked past to try to convey they had a real emotional stake in her victory and Sir Cliff Richard appeared out of nowhere to shake her hand. Some of America's most important contemporary cultural icons had been on Centre Court to witness her triumph. The music mogul and rapper Jay Z was there with his wife, the superstar singer Beyonce, in Williams' player's box. The comedian and chat show host, Ellen DeGeneres was there too. Everybody wanted to be seen with Serena, to be associated with her.
