Pediatrician, 69, left permanently disabled after a routine operation on her bottom went wrong

Diana Birch (left), 69, was left with permanent nerve damage and is unable to move around without the use of a wheelchair (right).

Her ureter was also damaged by the surgery, and one of her kidneys had to be removed as a result of the procedure (inset) at the Royal Free Hospital in north London three years ago. The hospital has since admitted liability for the laparoscopic rectopexy to repair her rectal prolapse. She has now received payment for rehabilitation and equipment to help her to live as independently as possible.
