Three startups win Seedstars Cape Town, advance to finals in Johannesburg

Three startups have emerged winners of Seedstars Cape Town, picking up slots to compete with other startups in the country at the Seedstars National Finals in Johannesburg.

Seedstars World opened applications for its South Africa event, comprising satellite events in Johannesburg and Cape Town, event last month as it searches the best of the best entrepreneurs in the country.
The Johannesburg satellite event saw 11 startups pitch to judges, with four selected to advance to the finals in Johannesburg.
Thereafter, Seedstars World announced the selection of 11 startups for the Cape Town satellite event, which took place on 8 June 2017 at Workshop 17. The judges selected mbora, GreenFingers Mobile and EMG Technologies as winners of the contest.
mbora is a solar-powered IoT-enabled sensing suite that delivers real-time visibility to a service provider across its entire network; EMG Technologies aggregates medical content from regional experts in one app; and GreenFingers Mobile is a mobile first Software-as-a-Service technology platform to finance and manage large groups of smallholder farmers.
The three startups, together with the finalists from the Johannessburg satellite event, as well as 3 wildcard startups, will pitch to a panel of judges at the National Final in Johannesburg on 29 June 2017.
Only one startup will emerge winner, receiving the title “Most Promising Seed-stage Startup of Seedstars World South Africa 2017” and going on to represent the country at the global final of the competition next year.
“Last year, we kicked off our entire tour in Cape Town. It was great to see so many new faces, from the startups that pitched to the audience and ecosystem players. We are curious to see which entrepreneur from what ecosystem will represent South Africa this year,” said Claudia Makadristo, Regional Manager of Africa.
