As hundreds of refugees from Syria and other conflict zones continue to embark on desperate journeys in search of a better life, Egyptian billionaire, Naguib Sawiris, has offered to buy an Island off Greece or Italy, and develop it to help hundreds of thousands of them.
The telecoms tycoon first announced the initiative on Twitter on Thursday. Sawiris later said in a television interview that he would approach the governments of Greece and Italy about his plan.
The telecoms guru believes this is feasible, because there are dozens of deserted islands that could accommodate hundreds of thousands of refugees.”
Sawiris said an island off Greece or Italy, could cost between 10 and 100 million U.S Dollars, but added that "the main thing is investment in infrastructure.”
He said there would be temporary shelters to house the people, but would employ others to build houses, schools, universities and hospitals.
More than 23 hundred people have died at sea trying to reach Europe since January, many of them Syrians who fled their country’s four-and-a-half year conflict.
