Sophie Nicholson, 33, from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, chose to have her lower left leg amputated this year (left, top centre and right). She had been left in a wheelchair after doctors incorrectly removed 4cm of bone from her foot to relive pain from high arches in 2007.
When she woke up from the operation she was in more pain than ever and despite eight more procedures, (an X-ray of her foot after the third operation is pictured, inset), she was left unable to walk and confined to a wheelchair. Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Trust have since admitted that the procedure was 'inappropriate' and that other options should have been considered and have awarded her £340,000 in compensation.
Since opting to have her leg removed she has had a new lease of life and is now even horse riding and ice-skating. She said: 'Now I've had my leg amputated I'm just excited to see what I can do, I never thought I'd be able to do anything like riding a horse or even walking around the park with my daughter. I'm trying to make up for all the time I've missed out on.'
