The stunning images were captured by Japan's Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Readiometer (Aster) instrument onboard the Terra spacecraft.

From top left clockwise, the images show; flooding caused by heavy monsoon rains over the city of Sukkur, Pakistain; the 2002 drought destroying vegetation (shown in red) in North Korea; 2003 fire burning on either side of Interstate 15 near San Bernardino; the eruption of Nicaragua's Momotombo volcano; the southwest part of the Malaspina Glacier and Icy Bay in Alaska (ice is in light blue); Sulfur released from a fire at an industrial plant in Mosul, Iraq, in 2003. The sulfur is shown in pink.
