Baby Tommy was born on the hard shoulder of M42 after his pregnant mother was stuck in a traffic jam on the way to hospital

A baby boy was born on the hard shoulder of a motorway after his expectant mother got stuck in a 15-mile traffic jam.

Sam Walker, from Solihull, West Midlands, was travelling with partner Terry Kemp and their two sons Luke, 4, and Ollie, 3, (right) on the M42 near Birmingham (inset) yesterday evening when traffic ground to a halt due to a fuel spillage. The 33-year-old suddenly felt contractions - despite her baby not being due for another three weeks - and urged Terry, 29, to pull over. The father-to-be made a frantic 999 call but just moments later, Sam gave birth to a little boy, Tommy (left).
