'The Pill nearly killed me': Student given contraceptive to treat acne develops blood clot which travelled to her heart

Madison Brownley, 18, who is studying in Birmingham, was prescribed the combined contraceptive pill to treat acne. Just two months later, she began to suffer terrible pain in her lower back and groin.

One day in November 2013 she woke up to find her leg red and swollen and her toes blue. Feeling faint, she was rushed to A&E where scans revealed a giant blood clot. Shortly after the clot was detected, it emerged part of it had broken off and was travelling towards her heart - which would have been fatal. Doctors in intensive care battled to save her life - and she will now have to take blood-thinning medication forever. She can also never use hormonal contraceptives - such as the Pill, implant, patches and coil ever again. Miss Brownley said: 'I know clots aren't common but they're definitely not as rare as doctors suggest.'
