Brothers in arms: Victorious Brownlee boys embrace after winning gold AND silver as Alistair beats his younger sibling Jonny and makes history by becoming first triathlete to defend Olympic title

Alistair Brownlee has won Team GB's twentieth gold medal of the Olympics, taking first place in the triathlon - while his younger brother took silver.

The 28-year-old has become the first triathlete to retain an Olympic title, while 26-year-old Jonny beat his London 2012 effort of bronze to claim a silver medal. The brothers shared a touching moment at the end of the race as they collapsed into each other's arms on the finishing line (pictured main). The elder brother pulled away from his sibling halfway through the 10km run (shown right), eventually coming in several seconds ahead of Jonny. So confident was Alistair of victory that he grabbed a Union flag from the crowd with about 100ft to the finishing line (shown left), pausing slightly to allow his brother to catch up. The siblings (pictured together, inset) were favourites going into the event, and kept to that tag in fine fashion by finishing way ahead of the rest of the field.
