As Nigeria moves to achieve the June 2017 new deadline for complete digitisation, leading telecommunications firm, MTN, has committed to supporting the efforts of government by investing in infrastructure that would serve as backbones for a successful switchover.
This came as experts called for an all-inclusive policy that will positively chart the course for a successful implementation of the digitisation process, canvassing for a high-level stakeholders’ engagement devoid of any undue interest that may again set the country’s ambition apart.
In her goodwill message to the recent Digital Broadcasting Africa Forum 2016 in Lagos with the theme: “Pan-Africa Transition: Achieving Digital Migration Success”, MTN Executive, Amina Oyagbola, said the event was apt against the backdrop of government’s renewed drive to meeting the new time limit.
As a major player in the nation’s ICT sector, Oyagbola said: “So far, we have invested over $15 billion in our operations in Nigeria particularly providing infrastructural backbone for the ICT sector in the country. We are committed to driving socio-economic development in Nigeria and we are always ready to support the government in this regard. We believe with the right policies and regulations that are all-inclusive and cooperation among stakeholders and operators, Nigeria stands a very good chance of not shifting the digital switch over date again,” Oyagbola enthused.
Earlier, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said Nigeria and indeed Africa had a lot to gain from the outcomes of the parley as they affect policy formulation and implementation that would aid full digitisation across the continent.
“We cannot afford to be left out in the global trend towards digital switch over because of the positive impact on Nigerians across all sectors, including education, health, tourism and other areas of our lives,” he said.
