New Independence Day movie bombs with critics who mock star Liam Hemsworth for trying to be 'Tom Cruise in Top Gun' and lambaste the 'shockingly inept' and 'hilariously dumb' alien invasion plot

The film, a sequel to the 1996 classic starring Will Smith, sees another alien invasion, two decades after the threat that first terrorized Planet Earth - and questions whether the defenses put into place after the first instance will be enough to save mankind. 


It came out Friday amid excoriating reviews - with critics branding it a 'non-movie' and an embarrassment to its genre. Entertainment Weekly 's Chris Nashawaty blasted Hemsworth's performance as pilot Jake Morrison (left), writing that he 'so badly wants to be Tom Cruise in Top Gun that he should have "Maverick" stenciled on his jumpsuit'. Several viewers seemed to shared the critics' disappointment on Twitter (inset), as one of them called it 'a long and boring movie'.
